{Butterflies} New Quilt Project

Hi dear friends! It has been a little bit quiet here lately but something I have done. Lots of planning in my mind, lots of thinking what fabrics to use/order and finally some testing blocks. Beginning a new quilt project is always exciting but it can be also very challenging, too.

butterflies new quilt project

As you know, I plan as a go and always with the fabrics. They give me ideas and that’s the way I like to see what fabrics and colours will work as I like. But for this big project I need to order fabrics before I can really start and because it can take even 4 weeks to receive them, I can’t just order something to try and then order more.

After lots of lots of thinking I have ended up to Kate Spain‘s ‘Early Bird’ from Fat Quarter Shop. Adding some beautiful blue prints, I’m sure this will work well. I’m imagining different kind of butterflies in different sizes. Have to find a way to make some flowers, too. Perhaps some applique, but that I shall see later.

butterfly quilt block

When trying to think how to make improvised butterflies, I draw one. This could be paper pieced but also this can be a guide for free piecing. I wanted to try free piecing to be able to make butterflies that look improvised and coulr make some of them quite big.

You can see from these process photos that I was going on with similar way like paper piecing but without paper. And of couse my pieces are not precise. I tried to find fitting pieces from scraps and when didn’t manage, then cut from the big piece of fabric.

I had to trim the turquoise more than I had planned so the wings became quite short, but there are so many kind of butterflies so I think this is also cute. I don’t know if these will in the quilt. I have to see later when I have done a lot with the main fabrics.

One evening I had company, not only Hanna, but this tiny dragonfly (is it dragonfly?).

dragonfly

Looked like she enjoyed modelling and was watching what I’m doing. It stayed at the end of the iron board all the evening! When I made the ‘Bunny’s Friends’ quilt, I had special little helper! Perhaps you like to read the story: Part 1,  Part 2, Part 3, Part 4. When I looked now those posts I was wondering how my sewing room was then so empty and in order?!

Nelli enjoyes her special private window place. This is Nelli’s room and place to store ‘things’. This window is in the last corner, perhaps the most pieceful place in the whole house but with a great view to the garden. Nelli can see what the dogs are doing there, if any neighbour cat is passing, birds visiting the water bowl. She found this place on her own when wanted to hide from ‘Paris’ and from then I find her sleeping here long times every day.

Nelli cat

When I decided about the fabrics, I thought I could use also some Grand Canal (by Kate Spain too) I had purchased earlier. Because they are Jelly roll, I wanted to try how the make a butterfly with strips.

sewing butterfly

Those diamonds are there because I had already made many of them with that Jelly roll. I may use them or not. They could be on the borders around, spread randomly or they could create something like flowers.

While waiting the fabrics to travel on the other side of the world, I can make some small butterfly blocks with paper piecing and to test how perhaps make some flowers.

Thank you very much for visiting and reading my blog! If you have a moment, write few words because your lovely comments make my day! Have you sewn butterflies? Have you tried free piecing or do you like foundation paper piecing?

If you like to crochet, you may like this crochet butterfly with free pattern. Notice that this pattern is not mine, I have only translated it. I was asked so much about the pattern and if there is English version, that I translated it with help of Avis from ‘Oh Sew Tempting’. Unfortunately I never managed to receve any answer from the original pattern but I have shared the link to it in the English pattern. So there you can find it also in Finnish.

Quilt blocks and spring stuff

Hello! Situation with my blocks was almost the same all month. But then few days ago I stepped into my sewing room and made one extempore filling block. That’s on the left up corner.

The Honey Pot Bee and other blocks

Today I made the book block designed by Kate Basti. That had been in my mind long time and I was happy to find it part of ‘The Honey Pot Bee’! Had it even printed already so it was just to decide what book it would be.

It is for recipes and writes also sweet sewing words (with really small letters!).

After many weeks being too busy with other works, it was nice to sew something easy. I shall make some filling blocks for my ‘The Honey Pot Bee’ project and this is one of them, with few favourites scraps.

May came and I’m thinking when the winter passed? First of May, shephard with his dogs and sheeps had made big, flower wreath!

greece

We went for a drive to Marathi in Akrotiri.

Greece

Celebrating name day, birthday and 1st of May we enjoyed delicious sea food!

Back home … lemons … I love to pick them from the tree in our garden.

Bought some flowers to cheer up our garden.

Made some bracelets and read this book. I read all the time something but because I can’t get easily books of my choise, it was great to read a book that hold me tight til the end.

This could be place to use some letter blocks I have made now and then.

There are still blocks to come in ‘The Honey Pot Bee’, so I won’t connect these yet. Perhaps the letters will wait an other project, book related, that has been on my list.

Scraptastic Blocks

Hi dear friends! Is it again time for Scraptastic Tuesday, relly? Yes it is, so lets see some scrappynes!

scrappy blocks by teje

Now when the Puppy and Girl quilt top is down from this extra design wall I could put there ‘The Honey Pot Bee’ blocks and few others.

starry sky block

Starry sky block is the latest I made just yesterday evening. It’s one of my very favourites even first I wasn’t sure what fabrics/colours I should pick. I’m very happy with the low volume squares but also with the white. This block is by ‘A Persevering Mom’, like is also the bowl of ice cream. That’s for sure my other very favourite!

ice cream bowl

The bowl with ice cream is the 1. block for the ‘Sweet Treats QAL’ by ‘A Persevering Mom’. There are at least two more blocks already but I didn’t have time to make them yet.

ice cream bowl

One other block that is not part of ‘The Honey Pot Bee’ is my Flying Kite block.

flying kite block by teje

I had made a while ago that small one with english paper piecing using diamonds and squares. It was just trying something and for fun and that’s why I hadn’t plan well how to do the outside pieces. The big one is made with normal piecing using diamonds and triangles. Have to say that it looks easier than it is because the points where hard to match. Now I have drawn also foundation paper piecing patternfor this. I would like to share that but don’t know how to make that printable to share it here.

Flying Kite by Teje

Here you can see the general idea how I made the big Flying Kite block. If you are interested I’m happy to share the measurements. And now I send you warm sunshine!

Flying Kite by Teje

Days are much longer and now I can see the sunset. In winter it sets behind some buildings. Yesterday’s colours were awesome!

I try to eat more colourful!

I try to look more carefully!

for fun

I try to see more creatively!

And now I try to manage with four big puppies! We are again many here and there will be lots of playing, some home schooling and hopefully some sleeping too! This photo is from earlier visit. Lets see if I manage this time to get photo from all four together!

Nero and Hanna: waiting for the packet!

Vof vof, it’s me Hanna!  With Nero we have been waiting for The Packet! While waiting we did many things.

Nero and Hanna

It’s coming from far away and we woked up many mornings watching the sunshine on the Fabric Forest.

Fabric Forest quilt by Teje

Fell a sleep many evenings … watching the same sunshine! One day I had bath and I looked like a wet bear!

Hanna had bath

Sometimes we got tired to wait. Isn’t it coming yet, Nero?!

Nero and Hanna

We had delicious food! Hb made it and said it’s soufle. I know there was bacon and that’s my favourite!

soufle

We had walks and picked little flowers. If you stop to smell the grass and look around you, you can see beautiful tiny things that other wise you wouldn’t notice. I think fairy uses that green thing to comb her hair.

wild flowers

Sometimes you can see bigger things. Nero’s job is to take rubbishes out. Look what he found one day! Is this a treasure or trash? I know I can fix it and it will be my treasure. It’s iron and there is mirror in the middle. That could be changed to something else, like my photo for example! No, now I know! I shall put there photo of me and Nero!

Hanna and old mirror

Hmmm, perhaps I shall make picture with Nero, Nelli, Foxy and me. That would be really nice.

We have been sewing a lot. Mostly I like the crown we made for The Honey Pot Bee! I want to give this crown to my hero, Nero! Last Monday he wasn’t well and we were so worried. You know that he is 12,5 years. But fortunately from Tuesday he was well again! What a relief to see him again happy, sitting on his favourite place, playing with ball, ears up and enjoying his small walks. Today I took the trash bag out and Nero said: ‘shouldn’t I go now out with that bag and not you?’ We all get used to our habits! I said to him: ‘Dear Nero, you can go today to the other road to read some new news’.

crown

Can you guess how fun it was to make this crown! When I was walking I was planning how to do it. I thought that darkened silver would be nice and then I could decorate it with lots of gemstones and with some colourful glass pieces. I love those turquoise diamonds! There is also silver thread!

crown

And I show you how I made the fun ribbon for the edge.

chevron edge

I was thinking hard how to add something to the edge and looked my fabric stash. Hmm something with lines … haa, yes chevron is just what I need! I didn’t cut the rest of the piece before marking it on the back side. I drew line where the stitiching should be and then added 1/4″ seam allowance.

My crown became improvised. I mixed up with my notes and those colourful triangles are not the same like in the pattern. Also the silver thread was a mess. It just ran out on its own! Lucky me who didn’t have bigger diamonds! But now I have an idea for a patent. Have to try first and then I tell you.

Hey Nero, I think I see something there on the road! Come to see! Is it our bike coming?

Hanna

Yes Hanna, it is and he’s carrying something wrapped with brown paper! It must be The Packet!

Nero

Jippii! Our packet is finally here! How exciting!

Seriously, Nero, is this all we have been waiting for so many days?! I think I’m a little bit disappointed. It did smell interesting but there were nothing to eat or play! Blaah.

quilt wadding

But no worries! I know that you know why this packet was so important. With Nero we can continue to wait; perhaps there will come something else, soon!

Nero and Hanna

You guessed right. This means that the quilt project with puppy and girl will continue.

If you like to continue reading, how about visiting Connie at ‘Free Motion by The River’. She shows us her sewing studio! Wow it is so spacious and well organized. Connie has a cute sewing friend Sadie and at the moment little visitor in her studio.

One quilt pattern has been long time in my to-do list and now I saw it in gorgeus colours! Free pattern ‘Blown Away’ by Jodi Godfrey from ‘Tales of Cloth’, is available at ‘Free Spirit Fabrics’. Shop fabrics here and find inspiration here.

This time I ordered the wadding / batting from ‘Chitter Scraps’ at etsy. I’m very happy and will shop again from them. There are lovely fabrics, too.

I’m joining my favourite linky parties! All the buttons are on my sidelist. Click to visit to see what other are sewing!

Thank you so much for reading my story! Kisses to you sweet friends for your lovely messages!

Drunkard’s Path for pillow

Hi Dear Friends! Somewhere last month I thought that it’s time to make a new pillow. Trying to keep my colour palet smaller, wasn’t easy. Curves are easier than expected.

drunkard's path pillow top

I drew the templates on my own. Because I haven’t done very much curves, this was also exercise and I cut the outside piece big enough to have space to trim if needed.

drunkard's path block

Okey, I could have trimmed the blocks smaller but I trimmed them as big as possible.

drunkard's path pillow top

That meant that the ‘flower petals’ didn’t meet, which doesn’t really matter, but made me continue.

drunkard's path quilt block

I wanted so much to add other colours for the leaves but then stayen in my plan and picked blues.

drunkard's path

I cut the leaves just free with scissors. With the hera marker I made line where I should turn the seam allowance and then I basted them. If you make the line with hera marker on the back side, it helps to turn the seam allowance. You can see the line a little bit on the dark leave down right.

drunkard's path

Leaves are ‘needle turn applique’ which is quite easy and you can find many tutorials from youtube and pinterest.

yellow flowers

Spring is here and even we have now few rainy days, last two weeks were warm and beautiful! Yellow spring flower from a friend … clearing the long greens from the garden made birds happy …

… mountain view from my sewing room … with some shadows of clouds …

For the quilting (by hand) I made several circles in the centre. Then I made other circles outside (using kitchen bowl to mark them).

Thank you for stopping by and for your lovely comments! Have a beautiful day!

Puppies and Paper Piecing

Hi dear friends! I hope you had a great weekend! We have holiday ‘Clean Monday’. That means the Easter fast begins. Today people go for a pic nic and to fly kites. They eat sea food, salads and enjoy the day with friends and family. Weather looks good for a pic nic and there is a gentle windy so there will fly many kites today!

paper piecing

I have said this many times but ‘donkey bridge’ appears so often in my thoughts when I’m blogging. I didn’t find yet name for this paper pieced block I have made, but in fact it looks like a happy kite on the sky! I shall name this and make also tutorial. I shall try to make also ‘without paper’ pieced or foundation pattern (no idea yet if that can be logical to make).

puppies-waiting-for-food

When you have four big puppies at home and one of them is teenager, you don’t need to think how to spend your time. It’s more to think if I could possibly make few stitches when everyone is resting after the supper. Here they are waiting for dinner. We wake up Very Early! Hmmm … that’s different with human teenagers and puppy teenagers! We go many walks every day and when finally each puppy has had their walk, I’m so ready just to sit. Have you tried to paper piece when you walk?

Nero, Hanna, Paris

Fortunately the gorgeus weather allows puppies to be in the garden as much as they like. Notice the green forest! We didn’t dare to cut away all the grass because one of the puppies loves to dig and get dirty with the delicious, wet solid!  So as les she sees the ground the better. Gardening has to wait a little bit.

img_8570

Saturday evening I thought it’s time to do little paper piecing which I had missed. These papers came with the ‘Love Qulting & Patchwork’ magazine few years ago (issue 24/2015). Squares are 1.5″x 1.5″.

english paper piecing

I continued early morning on Sunday because after too early wake up, eating and playing, all the puppies sleep again! I coulnd’t think of going back to bed 9:30 so I made second coffee and sew.  It went a little bit wonky. I guess the thing is the corners of the diamonds. They are so small! But fabric is forgiving and after removing the papers and pressing, it looks okey.

London

At least my sewing friends approve it totally … ‘it’s so beautiful! can I just get the goodies’! Behind you can see Nero’s and Hanna’s taverna. Table/floor cloth has to be colourful and the food is served on the little chairs. Especially for Nero it’s much more comfortable to eat when the bowl is higher. I guess that’s nice for any big dog.

Paris

‘Hey birdie’ where are you flew?

sewing suitcases

I have up-dated my sewing suitcases. The red one on the left was my first and it has usually been in the ‘hexagon’ project box. It needed clearing up and at the same time it was good to make an other one for quilting. Usually I hand quilt with Perle no 8 cotton but now I had a project where the green and light blue threads were good. The brown suitcase on the left was a present from ‘Tillkkutie‘ and the purple scissors from ‘Chromatobalomata’. Thank you friends!

sewing suitcases

Which are the few needles I really use? For the needles I add piece of felt with double sided tape (you can use felt, wadding or fleece).

sewing suitcase

You may think what’s  going on with my hexagons. They have been forgotten because I don’t like anymore my plan. Now I’m seriously thinking to rip the flowers apart and sew them more by colour to make few pillows.

paper piecing diamonds

Could you please help me to find a name for this ‘kite’ block! Perhaps ‘Spring Kite’?

Thank you so much for visiting! It was really nice to see you! Now it’s better I start to prepare the lunch before ‘they’ are all in the kitchen. You know that you don’t need big house even you have many puppies. Any way they are usually all in the same ‘corner’ and ‘in your feet’!

Thank you for your sweet comments and for reading and following my blog! Have a great day and see you soon!

Quilt top with girl and puppy

Hi dear friends! I hope you like lots of photos because I do! I enjoy posts with many photos and stories about process etc. So here we go! “Maggie and Puppy” baby quilt top and some details how I did it.

baby quilt

Here the quilt top is almost finished. Puppy’s leash and the ribbon for the balloon will be sewn later. Perhaps it needs also small border.

baby quilt by teje

First it was Maggie and in the very beginning her hair! One scrap gave me the idea for her hair. That scrap was left over piece from drunkard’s path outside piece. Here are now enough photos so I show you that scarp on an other time.

This is totally free piecing. I just cut pieces and started to think how to sew them together and how to add the background.

patchwork girl

Next time I know to plan better so the seams will go more … something.

free piecing

free style patchwork

I was so happy to sew the curve for the skirt that totally forgot to think about the stockings!

patchwork girl

Easy way to make them was to sew the light green scrap on the top of the darker. Then I sew the pink stockings on both sides and trimmed the sides.

img_8487

img_8488

img_8489

Planning for some extras was fun even later I left the hand bag out because it looked too much.

girl with scraps

And here is Maggie.

free pieced girl

The other main thing I wanted to make for this quilt was a dog. I didn’t have any plan or drawing, just cut some pieces and then trimmed them to get the shape that looked like a puppy. Notice the collar is with the same ‘leather’ like Maggie’s turquoise booties!

patchwork dog

And here is Puppy.

patchwork dog

Few houses for the village.

house block

Flower gardens and green for the park. And white! That’s important for me to get lightful and fresh look. Before the white there is always something that bothers me and when I add white it’s fine.

patchwork house

I tried many balloons but at the end it looked best with one pink balloon. I sew the pink balloon like log cabin block and cut it circle/oval. It’s needle turn appliqued on the quilt top. I shall still cut away the fabric from behind the balloon.

baby quilt top

Weather has finally changed and there is spring in the air or in fact it is spring! Sunny and warm weather is the best when you take many puppies for many walks every day. That’s why Maggie and her Puppy needs to wait for a while to be continued.
