I made this quilt with free style piecing. I had general idea in my mind when I started but then I made plans as I went. Often I plan on my design wall.

This quilt is pieced by machine and quilted by hand using Perle cotton no 8.

{Puppy and Girl} baby quilt

Hi dear friends! I hope you are fine and enjoy the summer! It has been really hot here in Greece and finally yesterday evening arrived wind, can’t say cool but a little bit refreshing. That means back to works and sewing.

Puppy and Girl baby quilt by Teje

This quilt was improvised, free style project and lots of fun! Taking photos under the really strong summer light was difficult and I’m still not happy with the pictures but as this quilt has been finished for a while, it’s high time to show it. You know, new projects are on the way all the time!

Puppy and Girl baby quilt by Teje

My plan for this quilt was to make a quilt without any requests, not to think what there should be, what not, what colours some one likes or doesn’t like and not to worry if it works out or not. Just to create picture quilt with improvised piecing.

Puppy and Girl quilt by Teje

I thought if I managed to make these little dogs and other creatures in the beginning of my quilting career, I should now be able to make one nice big puppy.

Puppy and Girl by Teje

Beginning of the girl was a scrap, left over from drunkard’s path and it looked excatly little girl’s hair!

quilting

This time I used Warm & Natural wadding. Basted and pinned on the floor under Nelli’s control.

Puppy has collar from same ‘leather’ as the shoes of the girl. Leash and the balloon’s ribbon are raw edge bias stripe, the same like I used for the flowers in my ‘Florist’ quilt.

Hand quilting with Perle Cotton no 8. Even I try sometimes other threads for quilting, I return to these because they are just so beautiful!

quilting

One of the happy moments is always when I can trim the edges and start the binding. I was thinking and thinking what can I use for the binding. Then I saw piece of this stripy fabric in my binding box and knew This is It! It looks quite busy but I allow this quilt to be busy, happy, fun, like a neigborhood with laughing kids, puppies, balloons, flower gardens and little cosy homes!

{Florist} mini quilt

Hello dear friends! This mini quilt started totally extempore and was one of the most enjoyable projects I have done!

Florist mini quilt by Teje

The base is made with low volumes and you can see that HERE.

Now the quilt is washed and I love all those wrinkles!

Florist mini quilt by Teje

On the low volume quilt I was supposed to create something applique. Those ideas changed few times and I ended up making these fun shape flowers. I was also happy to have a chance to use some of the bias strips I have from my mom’s stash. They are for poppana weaving and they are thinner and softer than the similar strips for rug weaving.

raw edge applique

For the flowers I chose colours to match with the low volumes and few more bright ones.

threads

I sew the pieces simply twice around with cotton thread in light blue. I didn’t use any fusible materials, just pinned the pieces on their places.

applique flowers

Here is the quilt after sewing the flowers, before the hand quilting and embroidery stitching.

raw edge applique flowers

As you saw, I quilted first by machine straight lines on the low volume quilt. Then I sew the flowers and after that I made some embroidery stitching on the flowers and leaves.

quilting threads

I quilted also by hand lots of lines between the machine quilted lines. I did them randomly, some only short lines, some full width and in several low volume colours.

embroidery

And here we are just before the washing. Now I tell you that it was a mistake to make the binding before finishing. I didn’t think that I shall quilt so much by hand and all that made the quilt wrinkle quite much, so the binding was slightly ‘too big’. After washing I ripped the binding, for the first time ever! I knew I wanted to be perfect perfect and I’m happy I made it again.

Florist mini quilt by Teje

And then lets see what magic washing makes!

mini quilt behind

Because I didn’t quilt on the flowers but made like embroidery, leaves and flowers stayed a little bit fluffy.

raw edge applique flowers

Those bias strips are so cute!

applique leaves

Kona cottons didn’t fray very much. Blue leave is Essex linen, grey is Oakshott and they frayed beautifully.

applique leaves

{Florist} mini quilt is different than my earlier works and I’m so happy I jumped to this sudden project!

INSPIRATION:

Inspiration for this quilt came from Jo Avery at My Bear Paw’s mini quilt for Pantone’s colour challenge. It really spoke to me! Have a look also how fantastic improvised flowers she makes!

After making the flowers, I was remembering something that I had seen at Kviltstina. Stina’s style inspires me a lot and I think her tulips or this quilt gave me idea for the flowers. She has made for example improvised blueberries and butterflies!

Sunday Stash: Lots of new Fabrics!

Hello dear friends! Oh I love fabrics, gorgeus fabrics, fabric bundles, half yards, fat quarters, yards, fat eights, delicious colours and beautiful prints!  So much awesome fabric has arrived to my sewing studio! and this is not all …

new fabrics

I’m so happy to start the butterfly quilt and for that I had to find colourful fabrics and blue fabrics. The basket full is from “Fat Quarter Shop”.

fabrics

Lets start from the most colourful! ‘Early Bird’ is amazing collection by Kate Spain. I adore her fabrics; always so beautiful!

Early Bird by Kate Spain

This is a fat eight bundle and that’s why there are so many pieces. It includes also few solids. So Beautiful! I love bundles to be able to get lots of prints and colours and they are perfect for my scrappy designs!

Early Bird by Kate Spain

When searching for blue fabrics I finally decided to buy these …

fabrics from Fat Quarter Shop

They are: Nature Walk Cloud Marguerite (pink / in sale!), Grand Canal by Kate Spain (leaves), Neighborhood light blue (dogs and cats), True Blue Circles in Admiral’s blue and Glasier, Modern Minis Blue Circles (down left / in sale!) and Storybook Vacation Blue Fancy Flower (small flowers).

All these and the ‘Early Bird’ fat eight bundle are from “Fat Quarter Shop”. I was happy with the prices and very quick delivery!

Few weeks ago arrived lots of frabrics, too! Fabrics down on the back are from IKEA. One on the front left is linen from Ikea and it’s very interesting! Most likely will become bags. All these Ikea fabrics are heavier that quilting cottons so they will be bags, pouches etc.

Low volumes and those two up fabrics are from the “Needle and Foot”. Great fabric shop in etsy, which I saw in Instagram. Friendly service, good prices and beautiful fabrics! Shipping took more time but I’m used to that so I’m never in hurry with my orders. The fabric with bees is Bumbble Buzz by Maureen Cracknell (we all love her fabrics, right!). Flowers next to that is Remnant – Tossed Floral by Alice Kennedy.

fabrics

I really missed (and still do) low volumes! I had hardly any and wanted so much to create with them. So when I saw a fat quarter bundle with letters and text in low volumes, I had to get it! It’s Basically Low by Helen Stubbings. Low volume flowers on down left is Lily Flowering Rows by Alice Kennedy and the far left grey/blue is Color Weave Textured (my new favourite basic! it has gorgeus feeling). So these were all from ‘Needle and Foot‘. Just add this on my wishlist!

low volumes

As I now finally have low volumes, I made already last weekend mini quilt. This weekend I have continued and here is a small sneaky peaky!

low volume quilt

An other low volume fat quarter bundle I have, is with sewing items and it’s from “Fluffy Sheep Quilting”. The ‘fish’ in the corner is from ‘Tik Tok’ charm pack (bought long time ago).

Early Bird by Kate Spain

I could have played with these beautiful, folded fabrics all day long, but today was laundry day!

washing fabrics

pink

One day someone asked me on the street if I have seen their cat. Unfortunately not, but I asked where they live if I see the cat. In the pink house, was the answer!

Thank you for stopping by! I hope you enjoyed your visit here and perhaps found inspiration and info for your fabric shopping!

Low volume mini quilt

Hi dear friends! I have and don’t have finished quilt to show! Yes, it is finished but there will be more!

low volume mini quilt by teje

Hmmm, I am a little bit tempted to keep it like this, but I shall continue because I have some cute ideas.

low volume fabrics

I had just a while purchased one low volume, fat quarter bundle (with letters and tekst) and had one other (with beige sewing things). Finding few others from my stash, I was able to gather this collection.

When everything was ironed after prewashing, I cut out the selvages, 3 1/2″ squares for my ‘fabric sampler’ project (not started yet) and 4 3/4″ squares for this low volume mini quilt. Why that size? Because I had two 5″ charm squares and picked some low volumes from one Jolly Bar (that is a selection with 5″ x 10″ retangles). After showering these I was able to cut 4 3/4″ squares. Fat Quarter Shop carries these Jolly Bars.

quilt project with low volumes

Then was time to decide about the layout. I found some ‘left over’ triangle blocks and looked like they could fit here. It was nice like this but I felt there was too much red. So had to find few other fabrics.

low volume patchwork

Triangle with black honey comb popped strangely so I turned some of the triangles horizontal and decided to stay with this. Often I use just too much time for the arranging.

low volume squares

I sew the pieces quickly and the top was done. Then basted it, quilted some lines and binded. For the binding I almost used one black with white teksts. Then fortunately still had a quick look to my stash and saw this ‘purple’ fabric which I hadn’t concidered at all low volume until I saw it with this quilt! For me this was a perfect match. I didn’t want the binding to separate very much, didn’t want to use any fabric from the quilt or any solid. This I really like because it has good connections: black on white and purple.

binding quilt

I cut the binding slightly less than my usual 2 1/5″ binding strips. Double folded and machine sewn on both sides. On the backside I sew two triangles, folded from 4″ square (under the binding with same seam) on the up corners for hanging.

quilt binding

One evening, too tired to sew, I took the hexagons out and tried to remember what was my plan for them. Ah, yes, I had ripped several of them to make few separate pillows by colour (red/orange and blue/turquoise). But, pillows? Not so interested. So I started to arrange those few bigger pieces I had and to fill with lonely hexagons, adding some flowers outside … and really like this view.

hexagons

But that was before low volumes got all my attention!

strawberries

Have eaten really sweet strawberries! Soon their time is over here but I know many of you will enjoy them soon.

flowers

This funny bubble flower was picked from the road side on a puppy walk. I didn’t think it would last on the vase but it is growing! The little one on the right is ‘night flower’ and tiny flowers open in late evening and smell amazing!

flowers

Fabric bundles are so beautiful! I like fat quarter bundles because with few of them you get easily lovely variety to your stash and project.

low volumes

Have you seen the quilts for the “2017 Pantone Quilt Challenge” {Greenery}? Voting is open until 2nd of June. There are so many fantastic quilts! I didn’t have time to enter even had an idea but I really enjoyed following what quilts were made. For me voting was difficult and I decided to vote those quilts (one in every category) that inspired me mostly this moment. Can you guess which quilt inspired me to make my extempore low volume quilt?

mini quilt

Thank you for stopping by and reading about my quilt and other projects! Special fabric purchase arrived yesterday so the big project can begin soon. Bags and pouches are on the list, too … and I’m hoping to find time to sew summer blouses and pillows!

I shall join the link parties: ‘Lets Be Social’ and ‘Needle and Thread Thursday’.

Hanna’s Post: Butterflies and Lavender

Vof vof, friends! It’s me Hanna here, surrounded by lavender and butterflies!

Hanna puppy

Spring turns to summer here in Crete and there are lots of flowers around. When I come home from my walk, I have often flowers and leaves in my fur. In my garden there is a big lavender bush and it’s full of tiny purple flowers. When me and Nero walk near by this bush we smell really nice!

lavender

lavender

lavender

There are busy bees collecting honey and beautiful butterflies flying around.

butterfly

My new quilt projcet has butterflies and I have already made few to test how the free piecing would work. You can see more about that HERE.

fabric butterfly

butterfly

There are really so many kind of butterflies! That’s fun and gives me a change to make creative butterflies with different techniqs. You may know that I love paper piecing! But, the Big But is that it takes a lot of time and I think it’s better for small blocks. But, I made yesterday one purple butterfly and I love it! It took time but I’m hooked! I think I shall make few of these small butterflies but I couldn’t make many because this quilt is going to be the biggest I have ever made.

paper piecing butterfly

Patter is from Lillyella and I’m sure you have seen many of these beautiful butterflies flying around in blogs and instagram. I made small change on the body

paper pieced butterfly

butterfly quilt block

Diamond blocks are made with Kate Spain‘s ‘Grand Canal’. I think my favourite is this deep purple! It brings water to my mouth! Now I’m waiting to receive bundle of ‘Early Bird’ also by Kate Spain, to continue this project. I think these small butterflies with solids add something special to this quilt.

lavender

I picked lots of lavenders to make later lavender pouches. There is still much more to cut but I leave them for the bees for a while.

dear dog Hanna

Hmmm, what I was thinking? Making plans is one of my favourite hobbies. Often it’s difficult to concentrate and start to make something. But when I start then it’s difficult to stop. I was thinking to clean in the garden, you know those fallen leaves and flowers, but I think I prefer to make new butterfly. What you think about juicy yellow-green butterfly? … pink … turquoise …

I shall join my favourite linky parties with my friends! All the buttons are on my sidelist, so click and see what everyone has been doing!

Kisses from HANNA
