{Florist} mini quilt

Hello dear friends! This mini quilt started totally extempore and was one of the most enjoyable projects I have done!

Florist mini quilt by Teje

The base is made with low volumes and you can see that HERE.

Now the quilt is washed and I love all those wrinkles!

Florist mini quilt by Teje

On the low volume quilt I was supposed to create something applique. Those ideas changed few times and I ended up making these fun shape flowers. I was also happy to have a chance to use some of the bias strips I have from my mom’s stash. They are for poppana weaving and they are thinner and softer than the similar strips for rug weaving.

raw edge applique

For the flowers I chose colours to match with the low volumes and few more bright ones.

threads

I sew the pieces simply twice around with cotton thread in light blue. I didn’t use any fusible materials, just pinned the pieces on their places.

applique flowers

Here is the quilt after sewing the flowers, before the hand quilting and embroidery stitching.

raw edge applique flowers

As you saw, I quilted first by machine straight lines on the low volume quilt. Then I sew the flowers and after that I made some embroidery stitching on the flowers and leaves.

quilting threads

I quilted also by hand lots of lines between the machine quilted lines. I did them randomly, some only short lines, some full width and in several low volume colours.

embroidery

And here we are just before the washing. Now I tell you that it was a mistake to make the binding before finishing. I didn’t think that I shall quilt so much by hand and all that made the quilt wrinkle quite much, so the binding was slightly ‘too big’. After washing I ripped the binding, for the first time ever! I knew I wanted to be perfect perfect and I’m happy I made it again.

Florist mini quilt by Teje

And then lets see what magic washing makes!

mini quilt behind

Because I didn’t quilt on the flowers but made like embroidery, leaves and flowers stayed a little bit fluffy.

raw edge applique flowers

Those bias strips are so cute!

applique leaves

Kona cottons didn’t fray very much. Blue leave is Essex linen, grey is Oakshott and they frayed beautifully.

applique leaves

{Florist} mini quilt is different than my earlier works and I’m so happy I jumped to this sudden project!

INSPIRATION:

Inspiration for this quilt came from Jo Avery at My Bear Paw’s mini quilt for Pantone’s colour challenge. It really spoke to me! Have a look also how fantastic improvised flowers she makes!

After making the flowers, I was remembering something that I had seen at Kviltstina. Stina’s style inspires me a lot and I think her tulips or this quilt gave me idea for the flowers. She has made for example improvised blueberries and butterflies!

{Village of Moomins} Baby Quilt

Hello, hello dear friends! You have seen some sneaky peakys of cars and houses, Moomins popping out here and there and finally it’s show time: {The Village of Moomins}!

Village of Moomins baby quilt by Teje

When I started to plan this baby quilt in my mind I was thinking of a small village with houses and gardens. Then my friend said there could be cars because she liked the little cars I had used for pillows.

baby quilt with moomins

When having all the puppies here and not being able to plan with fabrics as I often do, I had made this illustration.

So I continued with the houses and gardens but instead of the dog and tree, I started to think how to add cars.

quuilt project in my sewing room

I was in trouble with my fabric stash. You may see here lots of blue and green but I felt that I couldn’t find the right shades. Like the cloudy sky below – so fun but totally too busy. I think this pink house had been the first one I made, but later it was left out.

Moomins quilt house

Because my design wall has still the ‘Dream Catcher’ project I had to make improvised small place to see well my plans, fabrics, colours etc.

quilt project

For the cars, I drew first simple car with few lines to see if that could look like a car and then started with fabric.

improvised car block

Vintage thread spool had good size to draw the circles and a scrap saver may find just something perfect for the wheeles.

Moomin's car

I made houses, changed some of them and tried to find out how to add the important white.

baby quilt process

I made white houses and they gave the light I always need in my quilts. Traditional Greek houses has been white so this Moomins’ village may be some where in Greece.

Baby quilts are small enough to baste comfortable on the table.

Hand quilted as usually; this time free motion waves. And quilt label with one happy Moomin.

QUILT DETAILS:

Name: ‘Village of Moomins’

Designed and made: by me

Size: 38″x 46″ (95 cm x 115 cm) about (forgot the measure when it was finished)

Pieced improvised and quilted by hand.

Baby quilt Moomin's village

I enjoy making pictures, little stories and with fabric it’s really fun to create quilts like this. The next baby quilt has puppy with girl.

Thank you for joining me today and reading my quilting and other stories! Thank you for your lovely comments! And thank you for following here and in Instagram!

{Sunshine} Baby Quilt

Hi Dear Friends! Until this moment this quilt has no name. But I feel quilts need name and watching these happy, warm colours I thought it is like Sunshine!

Baby quilt with Moomins by Teje

You may feel that you have seen this quilt before because I have made an other similar baby quilt. Economy block is very good to get lovely organized look even you mix lots of fabrics. You can fussy cut and show the cute fabrics in the centre squares.

fabrics for baby girl quilt

Fortunately I found beautiful girlish fabrics from my last trip to Finland and pink Moomins!

economy blocks

How I work: I don’t cut all the blocks in the beginning. I cut, sew and trim some blocks and then put them on the design wall. Then I start to look what it needs. I like to create balance with colours and also with the volume. I try to find arrangement where the same fabric is not next to each others. That’s not always possible.

img_8276

To get finished block size 8″x 8″, cut 1 (4″ x 4″) square for the centre, 2 x (4″x 4″) cut in half for the inside triangles and 2 x (5″x 5″) cut in half for the outside triangles. Look the square down on left (white with pink centre): that’s trimmed to 5 1/2″x 5 1/2″ before adding the outside triangles.

QUILT SIZE: 37″ x 45″ (95 cm x 114,5 cm)

economy quilt block

Had to take photo with Finnish Fox candies (Pihlaja by Fazer) because happened to have still few! Just ate the last one! I would love fabric with those fox faces!

baby quilt

Hand quilting with Perle Cotton no 8, as always.

Moomins

Then I came to a question. My quilt labels and cards needs to be updated. Should I order new labels for quilts? I don’t know yet, so for a while I shall go on with handmade labels. I cut octagon and ironed fusible web on the back to be easier to stitch the letters. I folded the edges first so the fusible web hold them also nicely. It’s quite hard to stitch letters, try yourself! How I wished I could do that with sewing machine!

quilt label

Baby girl is born and quilt is delivered. I hope she will be happy with this quilt and laugh with the Moomins.

baby quilt

You may have seen in Instagram that I have continued to play with Moomins. Other baby quilt is on the table. Unfortunately I can’t show that project much yet but I can tell you that it’s fun!

It’s a Valentine’s day week so I wish you Happy Valentine’s Day! Did you see Helen’s sweet Valentine post?! I want to make the pillow she has there! And the little quilt! But first I have a job to do with Moomins and safety pins!

Thank you so much for visiting and for the lovely comments you write! Welcome to new followers! Your comments make my day so please write!

Hanna’s Post: {Yellow Submarine} quilt

Vof vof friends! I’m happy to see you and hope you are fine! Today I show you this quilt …

Hanna and quilt

… which we tried to finish for the Christmas and to put it in Santa’s bag. That didn’t happen and we gave this quilt to hb few weeks ago. I’m trying to find the submarine …

Hanna and quilt

… but I see birds, jars, letters, cars, scooters … nothing looks submarine to me … it is kind of ship right?

Hanna singing

Haa, now I understand the name! When we were quilting this, I was often singing “Yellow Submarine”! My extempore video didn’t turn out good enough to show, have to exercise more,  so you can listen Ringo Starr singing ‘Yellow Submarine‘.

kumiko fujita fabric

Pattern is simple, 5″ x 5″ squares in point. We started with a charm pack ‘Tiki Tok’ by Jenn Ski. It has lovely colours with vintage feel, colours that hb likes. Yellow fabric with letters and text is by Kumiko Fujita. That we bought long time ago and used the last pieces here. Some other fabrics are from England, US and Norway (www.stoffstil.com).

img_8381

We have had quite cold winter here in Crete and wanted to give this quilt even there are still few stitiching lines to make. All the fabrics are from our stash and trying to keep it in warm vintage colours was a challenge. Border with texts is Ikea fabric. It’s fun and many quilters like to use it.

img_8360

With rainy days, we couldn’t go out for photo shoot. When the last quilting will be done and it’s washed and wrinkled, I shall show you more photos. This quilt is 60″ x 75,5″ so it wasn’t easy to hold it and my only idea to show it at home was on the bed.

Hanna

I’m snuggling here because yesterday and today has been a little boring. Our sewing machine is in cleaning/service and someone had a ‘good’ idea to make a general cleaning in our sewing room. It’s so upside down that I can’t step in at all. Everything is out and I do hope she puts them back in same place because other wise we can’t find anything. But hey, she found the long lost needle felting needles! Like to hear from where? They were in a shoe box behind the fabric boxes ??? With dog’s logic you don’t keep shoe boxes in a sewing room!

Hanna singing

I decorated with my puppy friends and spring greeen lights! Why don’t we make quilt for the bed ‘header’?!

quilts by teje

Now it’s absolutely time for my afternoon walk and sun is almost shining, so quickly out before the rain comes! Then I think I need to give a paw with the cleaning. We have to finish today because tomorrow I want to start a new baby quilt!

Vof vof Dear Friends! So good to see you! I try to think “this is the day” and not to look too much back, but at the end of the year it’s nice to see what we have made this year.

Trunk Show – My Favourite Quilts

Hi Dear Friends! Welcome to my Trunk Show! Soma from ‘Whims and Fancies’ is hosting an online Trunk Show where we can show quilts! Here are the quilts I chose. Each quilt has a story and these are my favourites. I hope you enjoy the tour even you may have seen these before.

‘PUPPY PORTRAITS is one of my favourites! I love dogs and when I saw Lorna’s pattern with puppies I knew I have to do that! I participated the Blog Hop and made portraits for my puppies. Every puppy has a name and small story. Some of the puppies are hand pieced. I was very lucky and this quilt brought to me bundle of blue/grey Kona solids. (Used for example for ‘After the Storm’ quilt). PS. Lorna has add now ‘Paw Print’ blocks for this free pattern.

‘TRAVELLING BIRD’ is a mini quilt. I made this quilt to send a quilt book on a travel. First stop was my friend Judith. The idea was that each quilter reads the book and sends it further with something quilted. Judith made fantastic bag and sent the book again, but unfortunately after that the journey didn’t continue.

'Traveling Bird' by Teje

‘BUNNY’S FRIENDS’ was a special custom order. I enjoyed this project very much even I was also nervous if they would like it. I made first the cute bunny from Kristy’s pattern and the story began. Bunny tells the story how the quilt grows and how she had even some little helpers. This quilt looked so perfect on my sewing studio’s wall that it was hard to apart.

'Bunny's Friends' by Teje

‘PIC NIC ON THE BEACH’. This quilt was inspired by the ruler ‘Hex N More’ by Julie. I had just received the ruler so I was really excited and thought to make a quilt with all the possibilities this ruler gives. Having those beautiful, summer breeze fabrics, I started to make a big puzzle. This quilt was also one of the most enjoyable projects I have made!

‘PAPER DOLLS’ was custom order for a sweet girl. I thought this was the perfect project to use the fabric that I had treasured for a while.

Looks quite clearly that I like animals and children quilts with happy colours! But lets continue our Trunk Show …

Online Quilt Trunk Show | Whims And Fancies

… with few other kind of quilts.

‘AFTER THE STORM reached to be one of the viewers’ choises in the latest ‘Blogger’s Quilt Festival’ and got 5th most votes! Wow I was so amazed and happy! It’s made with Kona solids and the pattern is Storm at Sea. This pattern appears with single or double diamonds. I made this quilt to calm down from a storm in life.

‘SWIRLS AND STARS’ from men’s shirts are special to me. I thank hb’s shirts for starting to quilt! I really liked the fabrics and colours and thought often how nice patchwork they would make. After many quilts I finally made these two quilts with his shirts. Fabrics are really good quality (not easy to hand quilt) but strong enough for our furry friends. I have given these to Nero and Hanna so I can enjoy watching them instead of some old blankets.

‘SUMMER WINE’ is paper pieced with octagons. Little white squares are sewn without papers, just folded the edges. I made this quilt during the hot summer days and my favourite song ‘Summer Wine’ was in my mind. This is small, soft quilt and I use it often on my sidetable. Some of the fabrics are vintage pieces and some from friends.

'Summer Wine' by Teje

‘FANTASY FOREST’ is my most special quilt. I hope that one day I shall make an other quilt, different, but as dear as this quilt. This quilt was part of the Forest QAL and won the 1st prize! I had never joined quilt along neither had done foundation paper piecing. When I saw the Woodpecker, I was totally sold! I thought this bird I shall make no matter what it takes. And as you can see I fell in love with paper piecing! In that time my fabric stash was smaller and it was real challenge to choose the fabrics and colours. On the other hand I feel that made this quilt more fun, creative and brave. If I had more fabrics, I may have chosen more traditional, safe colours for the animals and this quilt wouldn’t look so happy and alive.

Thank you Soma for this Trunk Show Quilt event! You made me search my quilts and that was fun. Many of my quilts give me ideas for new quilt designs! Also they give me inspiration which I have missed lately.  I realized that I need a new, long term, relaxing quilt project and in fact I have already picked the fabrics. Today I shall have a slow sewing Sunday … making diamonds from my new jelly roll: ‘Grand Canal’ by Kate Spain!

Thank you for visiting! I hope you found inspiration for your quilting! Enjoy your visit at the Trunk Show!

I’m joining the weekly linky parties, too. See the buttons on my sidelist.

Nelli’s Post: mice, pillows and quilt

Miaouuu lovely friends! Today it’s me Nelli here because something very special happened to me! I got my very own quilt! But first I show you the newest pillow, fresh finished from our sewing studio! There it is, that pink with hearts!

Nelli and new pillow

Here you can see it closer. I think I love pink! Hearts and milky star make this pillow look really beautiful!

pink heart pillow

But, there is a big BUT … this pillow is not mine. That makes me sad. And I’m not allowed even touch it because it is for our shop. So I sit nicely on the side …

Nelli and pillow

Did you notice anything special? From now on I have to keep my paws clean …

Nelli

… because I got my very own quilt! Can you believe that I was the only one in this house without quilt?! In fact I got a whole new bed! Usually I sleep on the queen size bed or Hanna’s big bed. I don’t understand what’s the problem if Hanna needs to sleep on the floor. Anyway, now I have new bed under the ‘Fabric Forest’ quilt.

Nelli and quilts

This bed is supposed to be enough big and soft … we’ll see if I like it or not. I wish I could have that pink pillow but no, it is now in Nero’s etsy shop. I hope one little, as cute as me, girl will get it! You see I have my mice friends to keep me company and heart decoration that I have made from Helen’s book: ‘Modern Vintage Gifts’!

hearts and mice

I love mice and have made also one bigger mouse from Helen’s book …

mice

I re-decorated a little bit because I got an other pillow. Do You like little birdies and mice?

mice and heart

As I couldn’t have the pink pillow which I like so much, I got a pillow to match my new, puffy quilt. Now I just need new matching collar … I said that the pink pillow was much better … I do my best to be happy with these …

Nelli's new bed

Have to run now, there are so many parties to join! Come with me!
