{Florist} mini quilt

Hello dear friends! This mini quilt started totally extempore and was one of the most enjoyable projects I have done!

Florist mini quilt by Teje

The base is made with low volumes and you can see that HERE.

Now the quilt is washed and I love all those wrinkles!

Florist mini quilt by Teje

On the low volume quilt I was supposed to create something applique. Those ideas changed few times and I ended up making these fun shape flowers. I was also happy to have a chance to use some of the bias strips I have from my mom’s stash. They are for poppana weaving and they are thinner and softer than the similar strips for rug weaving.

raw edge applique

For the flowers I chose colours to match with the low volumes and few more bright ones.

threads

I sew the pieces simply twice around with cotton thread in light blue. I didn’t use any fusible materials, just pinned the pieces on their places.

applique flowers

Here is the quilt after sewing the flowers, before the hand quilting and embroidery stitching.

raw edge applique flowers

As you saw, I quilted first by machine straight lines on the low volume quilt. Then I sew the flowers and after that I made some embroidery stitching on the flowers and leaves.

quilting threads

I quilted also by hand lots of lines between the machine quilted lines. I did them randomly, some only short lines, some full width and in several low volume colours.

embroidery

And here we are just before the washing. Now I tell you that it was a mistake to make the binding before finishing. I didn’t think that I shall quilt so much by hand and all that made the quilt wrinkle quite much, so the binding was slightly ‘too big’. After washing I ripped the binding, for the first time ever! I knew I wanted to be perfect perfect and I’m happy I made it again.

And then lets see what magic washing makes!

mini quilt behind

Because I didn’t quilt on the flowers but made like embroidery, leaves and flowers stayed a little bit fluffy.

raw edge applique flowers

Those bias strips are so cute!

applique leaves

Kona cottons didn’t fray very much. Blue leave is Essex linen, grey is Oakshott and they frayed beautifully.

{Florist} mini quilt is different than my earlier works and I’m so happy I jumped to this sudden project!

INSPIRATION:

Inspiration for this quilt came from Jo Avery at My Bear Paw’s mini quilt for Pantone’s colour challenge. It really spoke to me! Have a look also how fantastic improvised flowers she makes!

After making the flowers, I was remembering something that I had seen at Kviltstina. Stina’s style inspires me a lot and I think her tulips or this quilt gave me idea for the flowers. She has made for example improvised blueberries and butterflies!

Sunday Stash: Lots of new Fabrics!

Hello dear friends! Oh I love fabrics, gorgeus fabrics, fabric bundles, half yards, fat quarters, yards, fat eights, delicious colours and beautiful prints!  So much awesome fabric has arrived to my sewing studio! and this is not all …

new fabrics

I’m so happy to start the butterfly quilt and for that I had to find colourful fabrics and blue fabrics. The basket full is from “Fat Quarter Shop”.

fabrics

Lets start from the most colourful! ‘Early Bird’ is amazing collection by Kate Spain. I adore her fabrics; always so beautiful!

Early Bird by Kate Spain

This is a fat eight bundle and that’s why there are so many pieces. It includes also few solids. So Beautiful! I love bundles to be able to get lots of prints and colours and they are perfect for my scrappy designs!

Early Bird by Kate Spain

When searching for blue fabrics I finally decided to buy these …

fabrics from Fat Quarter Shop

They are: Nature Walk Cloud Marguerite (pink / in sale!), Grand Canal by Kate Spain (leaves), Neighborhood light blue (dogs and cats), True Blue Circles in Admiral’s blue and Glasier, Modern Minis Blue Circles (down left / in sale!) and Storybook Vacation Blue Fancy Flower (small flowers).

All these and the ‘Early Bird’ fat eight bundle are from “Fat Quarter Shop”. I was happy with the prices and very quick delivery!

Few weeks ago arrived lots of frabrics, too! Fabrics down on the back are from IKEA. One on the front left is linen from Ikea and it’s very interesting! Most likely will become bags. All these Ikea fabrics are heavier that quilting cottons so they will be bags, pouches etc.

Low volumes and those two up fabrics are from the “Needle and Foot”. Great fabric shop in etsy, which I saw in Instagram. Friendly service, good prices and beautiful fabrics! Shipping took more time but I’m used to that so I’m never in hurry with my orders. The fabric with bees is Bumbble Buzz by Maureen Cracknell (we all love her fabrics, right!). Flowers next to that is Remnant – Tossed Floral by Alice Kennedy.

fabrics

I really missed (and still do) low volumes! I had hardly any and wanted so much to create with them. So when I saw a fat quarter bundle with letters and text in low volumes, I had to get it! It’s Basically Low by Helen Stubbings. Low volume flowers on down left is Lily Flowering Rows by Alice Kennedy and the far left grey/blue is Color Weave Textured (my new favourite basic! it has gorgeus feeling). So these were all from ‘Needle and Foot‘. Just add this on my wishlist!

low volumes

As I now finally have low volumes, I made already last weekend mini quilt. This weekend I have continued and here is a small sneaky peaky!

low volume quilt

An other low volume fat quarter bundle I have, is with sewing items and it’s from “Fluffy Sheep Quilting”. The ‘fish’ in the corner is from ‘Tik Tok’ charm pack (bought long time ago).

Early Bird by Kate Spain

I could have played with these beautiful, folded fabrics all day long, but today was laundry day!

washing fabrics

pink

One day someone asked me on the street if I have seen their cat. Unfortunately not, but I asked where they live if I see the cat. In the pink house, was the answer!

Selvage Pouches

Hi Dear Friends! These selvage pouches didn’t appear here yet even I made them a while ago. After making cases for sunglasses and phones, I continued with {selvage & strips} inspiration.

Case for phone and sunglasses

Hi dear friends! Great to see you and hope you are fine! It’s beautiful spring, sun is shining and we are heading to summer.

phone and sunglass case by teje

I made new cases for sunglasses and phones!  I picked happy colours and add loop lock. You can catch the case on the loop of your jeans when going for a walk. If you like you can catch there also your keys or a strap to wear the case on your neck.

I have used selvages and add other strips and scraps for colour.

case for phone and sunglasses

Closings are with magnetics and there are some fun details.

phone case by teje

phone case

These cases are soft but firm enough to protect your sunglasses or phone. I have quilted the top piece with wadding and heavy-weight cotton and the cases have lining. The ribbon loop for the lock is small so if you don’t use the lock, it doesn’t bother.

sunglass and phone case

Some of these cases are in my etsy shop ‘NERO’S POST‘. If you like to get other size or colour, I’m happy to make custom orders!

sunglass and phone case

That smaller, flower case with strap is for my camera.

One baby quilt will be delivered soon and then I can show it to you! There are the driving Moomins! Next on my table are bag projects. One starts right now and I’m really happy to make that! I hope to baste the baby quilt ‘Puppy and Girl‘ soon. I have few new pouches to show. I made some new bracelets because they were almost finished. As you see, I do my best to focus this year!

Thank you for stopping by and reading my blog! Hanna and Nero send you hugs and thanks for your sweet comments on Hanna’s post!

Now first I shall print one bunny …

Have a great weekend!

Puppies and Paper Piecing

Hi dear friends! I hope you had a great weekend! We have holiday ‘Clean Monday’. That means the Easter fast begins. Today people go for a pic nic and to fly kites. They eat sea food, salads and enjoy the day with friends and family. Weather looks good for a pic nic and there is a gentle windy so there will fly many kites today!

paper piecing

I have said this many times but ‘donkey bridge’ appears so often in my thoughts when I’m blogging. I didn’t find yet name for this paper pieced block I have made, but in fact it looks like a happy kite on the sky! I shall name this and make also tutorial. I shall try to make also ‘without paper’ pieced or foundation pattern (no idea yet if that can be logical to make).

puppies-waiting-for-food

When you have four big puppies at home and one of them is teenager, you don’t need to think how to spend your time. It’s more to think if I could possibly make few stitches when everyone is resting after the supper. Here they are waiting for dinner. We wake up Very Early! Hmmm … that’s different with human teenagers and puppy teenagers! We go many walks every day and when finally each puppy has had their walk, I’m so ready just to sit. Have you tried to paper piece when you walk?

Nero, Hanna, Paris

Fortunately the gorgeus weather allows puppies to be in the garden as much as they like. Notice the green forest! We didn’t dare to cut away all the grass because one of the puppies loves to dig and get dirty with the delicious, wet solid!  So as les she sees the ground the better. Gardening has to wait a little bit.

Saturday evening I thought it’s time to do little paper piecing which I had missed. These papers came with the ‘Love Qulting & Patchwork’ magazine few years ago (issue 24/2015). Squares are 1.5″x 1.5″.

english paper piecing

I continued early morning on Sunday because after too early wake up, eating and playing, all the puppies sleep again! I coulnd’t think of going back to bed 9:30 so I made second coffee and sew.  It went a little bit wonky. I guess the thing is the corners of the diamonds. They are so small! But fabric is forgiving and after removing the papers and pressing, it looks okey.

London

At least my sewing friends approve it totally … ‘it’s so beautiful! can I just get the goodies’! Behind you can see Nero’s and Hanna’s taverna. Table/floor cloth has to be colourful and the food is served on the little chairs. Especially for Nero it’s much more comfortable to eat when the bowl is higher. I guess that’s nice for any big dog.

Paris

‘Hey birdie’ where are you flew?

sewing suitcases

I have up-dated my sewing suitcases. The red one on the left was my first and it has usually been in the ‘hexagon’ project box. It needed clearing up and at the same time it was good to make an other one for quilting. Usually I hand quilt with Perle no 8 cotton but now I had a project where the green and light blue threads were good. The brown suitcase on the left was a present from ‘Tillkkutie‘ and the purple scissors from ‘Chromatobalomata’. Thank you friends!

sewing suitcases

Which are the few needles I really use? For the needles I add piece of felt with double sided tape (you can use felt, wadding or fleece).

sewing suitcase

You may think what’s  going on with my hexagons. They have been forgotten because I don’t like anymore my plan. Now I’m seriously thinking to rip the flowers apart and sew them more by colour to make few pillows.

paper piecing diamonds

Could you please help me to find a name for this ‘kite’ block! Perhaps ‘Spring Kite’?

Thank you so much for visiting! It was really nice to see you! Now it’s better I start to prepare the lunch before ‘they’ are all in the kitchen. You know that you don’t need big house even you have many puppies. Any way they are usually all in the same ‘corner’ and ‘in your feet’!

Thank you for your sweet comments and for reading and following my blog! Have a great day and see you soon!

Quilt top with girl and puppy

Hi dear friends! I hope you like lots of photos because I do! I enjoy posts with many photos and stories about process etc. So here we go! “Maggie and Puppy” baby quilt top and some details how I did it.

baby quilt

Here the quilt top is almost finished. Puppy’s leash and the ribbon for the balloon will be sewn later. Perhaps it needs also small border.

baby quilt by teje

First it was Maggie and in the very beginning her hair! One scrap gave me the idea for her hair. That scrap was left over piece from drunkard’s path outside piece. Here are now enough photos so I show you that scarp on an other time.

This is totally free piecing. I just cut pieces and started to think how to sew them together and how to add the background.

patchwork girl

Next time I know to plan better so the seams will go more … something.

free piecing

free style patchwork

I was so happy to sew the curve for the skirt that totally forgot to think about the stockings!

patchwork girl

Easy way to make them was to sew the light green scrap on the top of the darker. Then I sew the pink stockings on both sides and trimmed the sides.

Planning for some extras was fun even later I left the hand bag out because it looked too much.

girl with scraps

And here is Maggie.

The other main thing I wanted to make for this quilt was a dog. I didn’t have any plan or drawing, just cut some pieces and then trimmed them to get the shape that looked like a puppy. Notice the collar is with the same ‘leather’ like Maggie’s turquoise booties!

patchwork dog

And here is Puppy.

Few houses for the village.

house block

Flower gardens and green for the park. And white! That’s important for me to get lightful and fresh look. Before the white there is always something that bothers me and when I add white it’s fine.

patchwork house

I tried many balloons but at the end it looked best with one pink balloon. I sew the pink balloon like log cabin block and cut it circle/oval. It’s needle turn appliqued on the quilt top. I shall still cut away the fabric from behind the balloon.

baby quilt top

Weather has finally changed and there is spring in the air or in fact it is spring! Sunny and warm weather is the best when you take many puppies for many walks every day. That’s why Maggie and her Puppy needs to wait for a while to be continued.

The Honey Pot Bee

Hello! I have a honey pot full of the sweetest, helthiest honey! Bees have collected it from tasty, Cretan herbs!

patchwork jars

honey

I made also jars with blueberry- and rasberry jam, strawberry marmelade and one jar has candies. Perhaps I’ll make one more with olives.

When having many projects going on, it’s better to create extra design walls. This is small portable board. I sew the little jars together but didn’t connect them yet with the honey pot. Also the self is not sewn because I don’t know yet how I shall place these blocks. For the upper small jars I have add small bottom corners to make them a little bit around.

the honey pot bee

Here are all my ‘The Honey Bee’ blocks until now.

the honey pot bee

Visit the page ‘The Honey Pot Bee’ for all the details and info.

On my big, main design wall is the ‘Dream Catcher’ and I wouldn’t like to take it down because it would be difficult to arrange it back again.

Dream Catcher by Teje

I try to manage with improvised, temporary design walls as long as possible. This one with the baby quilt project, is simply a long piece of fleece (use wadding if you have a spare piece) folded double. Wood stick is in the fold and with a cord-loop it’s hanging on the nail.

design wall

If I hadn’t saved the small scraps from the ‘Pic Nic on the Beach’ quilt, how could I have made the wheeles for Moomin’s car?! He stopped the car because saw one tiny hedgehog walking in the middle of the road!

Moomins car

Today I shall give one baby quilt away and then can concentrate to Moomins’ houses! You know there are always too many ideas and projects we are drawn to! I would love to do paper piecing, eep and foundation. I would love to dontinue ‘Grand Canal’ with diamonds! Perhaps I shall make the C for my letters.

I hope to finish Moomins soon to make still one more baby quilt top until it’s again time for puppies to visit us!

Thank you for stopping by and for your lovely, sweet comments here, in IG and in Fb!
